About

Ellen Liddell, Watercolorist

With splash and a dash, a swish and a splatter, my heart was stolen. I have felt compelled to paint watercolors from my very first introduction to the antics of color and water meeting on a wet sheet of paper.

“Like skaters on a frozen pond, the three of us—color, water, and I—perform a dance. Hopefully, I am leading but not quite controlling. Each improvised contribution has its moment ‘on the ice’ while I decide whether to keep it, alter it, or take it away. Many times the color or water offers something unexpected and often the unexpected becomes a solo part. Serendipity!”

I have absorbed techniques from many artists who have ‘mastered’ watercolor. I also learn from my students while teaching workshops around the United States. Practice is the key and I continue to pour myself into painting because even practice is fun and rewarding.

“Watercolor can be simple but it is rarely easy. If it were to cease being a challenge, I would probably move on to something else.”
